PROJECT

Combining research, outreach, film and art interactions, SEADRAGON CONSERVATION is an inter-disciplinary project between the University of Technology Sydney and Jordan Askill.

WEEDY SEADRAGONS

Weedy or common seadragons are found only in Australia and are iconic to the country's Great Southern Reef. They face many threats, including habitat and ecosystem loss due to human impact and climate change. Classified as 'Vulnerable' on the IUCN Redlist, little is known about the Weedy.

AIMS

SEADRAGON CONSERVATION aims to prevent Weedys from becoming endangered by establishing comprehensive demographic research datasets, breeding an insurance population and incorporating field observations into public art and engagement.

THE SAPPHIRE PROJECT

The Sapphire Project is a not-for-profit organisation supporting pioneering marine initiatives across Australia. It raises funds and awareness through The Sapphire Dinner—an annual gala that has generated over $6 million for ocean conservation since launching in 2021.

The Sapphire Dinner 2025 took place on Friday 15th August at The Carriageworks in Sydney where an incredible sum was raised for ocean preservation.

All funds raised go directly toward the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, with a percentage of these funds distributed between the additional four 2025 beneficiaries, including Great Southern Reef Foundation, Sea Forest Foundation, Surfers for Climate and SEADRAGON CONSERVATION.
